Product Development Engineer 2 (AI-Native) (Onsite role)
Our purpose is to help a billion people find the right work! Phenom is an AI-Powered talent experience platform that is redefining the HR tech space. We have grown into a global organization with offices in 6 countries and over 1,500 employees. As an HR tech unicorn organization, innovation and creativity are within our DNA. Come help us make every talent moment Phenomenal!
We are looking for a Product Development Engineer 2 (AI-Native) who takes complex ideas and customer needs and turns them into scalable, validated product features and agentic capabilities — owning them from initial design and prototype through production and continuous improvement. Here, everyone wears multiple hats: the same person who designs and builds a feature also ships it, supports the people using it, and leads the resolution of production issues. You own outcomes end-to-end and help raise the engineering standards of the team.
What You’ll Do
- Build innovative products on the Phenom platform — rapidly prototype solutions, validate their value, and harden successful capabilities into scalable products customers can rely on.
- Take complex ideas to production — design, build, validate, and independently own features end-to-end, then continuously improve them after they ship.
- Practice AI-assisted, increasingly agentic engineering — drive PRs with coding agents and custom skills, review AI-generated solutions critically, and ensure each PR updates the observability it depends on.
- Own delivery to customers — manage deployment readiness, production validation, and hypercare while partnering with platform and reliability engineers on deeper technical issues.
- Support customer bootcamps — lead and participate in technical enablement sessions, hands-on workshops, product demonstrations, and troubleshooting activities to help customers successfully adopt Phenom solutions.
- Respect the guardrails — separate analysis from action, require human approval for high-risk changes, and ensure decisions and actions are logged for auditability.
- Contribute to technical design and code reviews — identify risks, recommend scalable approaches, and help maintain strong engineering standards.
- Mentor junior engineers — guide them through design, development, debugging, testing, and production ownership.
What You’ve Done
- 3–5 years of software development or product engineering experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical field required; Master's degree preferred.
- Strong engineering fundamentals and critical thinking — AI raises the bar on technical judgment, architecture, and code quality; it does not replace them.
- Comfortable working across the stack and independently building solutions with modern AI coding tools and agents.
- Customer empathy — you can engage directly with customers, understand complex workflows, ask the right questions, and identify the problems that are most valuable to solve.
- End-to-end ownership — you independently finish what you start, support it in production, and continue improving it.
- Technical ownership — you can make sound design decisions, identify dependencies, manage risks, and balance speed with reliability and maintainability.
- Adaptable — eager to adopt new tools, evaluate emerging technologies, and continuously reinvent your engineering workflow as tooling evolves.
- A strong communicator who aligns quickly with engineers, product teams, customers, and cross-functional stakeholders.
- Experience reviewing code, contributing to technical designs, and supporting junior engineers.
- Bonus: experience building AI or agent products, workflow orchestration, distributed systems, observability, or agent workflows using an Agent SDK.
Technical Skills
- Programming proficiency — write clean, scalable, secure, and maintainable production code in at least one modern language, such as Python, Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, or Go.
- Computer science foundations — strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, complexity analysis, concurrency concepts, and decomposing complex problems into clean, testable components.
- Software design principles — strong understanding of object-oriented and functional concepts, clean-code practices, design patterns, and scalable code and API design.
- APIs and databases — experience designing and integrating REST APIs and JSON-based services, along with working knowledge of SQL, data modeling, and relational or NoSQL databases.
- Testing and debugging — experience writing unit, integration, and API tests and diagnosing complex issues methodically using logs, metrics, traces, stack traces, and code inspection.
- Distributed systems — working knowledge of asynchronous processing, retries, timeouts, idempotency, partial failures, and event-driven or microservice-based architectures.
- Observability — experience implementing or using structured logging, monitoring, metrics, distributed tracing, dashboards, and production alerts.
- AI tooling — hands-on experience with modern AI coding assistants and familiarity with LLMs, prompts, agent workflows, tool calling, evaluations, and guardrails.
How We Work
An AI-native engineering culture
- Big ownership, few meetings — we keep things small and autonomous, trust people to make local decisions, and protect focus time; alignment over ceremony, impact over output.
- AI-native, not AI-on-top — we continuously find where work slows down and apply agents and skills to remove the bottleneck across planning, code generation, review, testing, and support.
- Builders and platform engineers, side by side — deep infrastructure and reliability work keeps the platform stable while builders turn ideas into visible products fast. You’ll focus on building, partnering closely with platform and reliability engineers.
- Copilot before autonomy — agents start by analyzing, recommending, and drafting while engineers execute, and graduate to auto-remediating known-safe failures only after evaluations pass.
- AI is welcome in technical interviews — it’s how we work, so pair-programming and problem-solving with AI is a positive signal. (We’ll talk through behavioral and design topics without it.)
