About the Role

As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Deal Intelligence team, you will lead the design of scalable infrastructure and orchestration systems that enable intelligent agents to operate in complex business environments. This is not traditional backend work—you’ll build the cognitive substrate that allows agents to reason, remember, act, and adapt on behalf of users.

We’re looking for someone who thrives in ambiguous, emerging spaces—someone who has built large-scale distributed systems and worked hands-on with agentic AI architectures (e.g., RAG pipelines, memory systems, policy engines). Your work will directly power Highspot’s most strategic AI roadmap.

What You'll Do

Architect AI Agent Infrastructure

Design agent runtime environments that orchestrate long-running tasks, decisions, and tools.
Build modular systems for agent memory, contextual state handling, and secure API actions.
Integrate retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), multi-agent planning, and vector store reasoning.

Scale Core Systems

Own the backend architecture behind Deal Intelligence pipelines.
Ensure low-latency data access across MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Kafka, and Solr clusters.
Define and meet scalability, uptime, observability, and security goals.

Collaborate Across ML, Product, and UX

Work closely with ML engineers to productionize agent behaviors.
Integrate securely with Highspot’s permissioning, audit, and action layers.
Partner with product designers and PMs to co-create novel agent UX flows.

Drive Quality, Reliability, and Incident Learning

Lead postmortem reviews and build internal tools for debug-ability and traceability.
Evolve our LLMOps playbooks and safety guards for scalable deployment.

Your Background

8+ years experience in backend systems development, including 3+ years in tech lead capacity.
Proven track record building distributed systems at scale (Kafka, Kubernetes, AWS, async eventing).
Strong system design skills across stateless orchestration, caching, multi-tenant scale.
Experience working with AI agent infrastructure (LangChain, Semantic Kernel, Haystack, etc.).
Comfort designing tool-use protocols, memory chains, or agent routing logic.
Excellent communicator and collaborator across product, design, ML, and infrastructure teams.

Strong Candidates May Also

Experience with agent evaluation frameworks (e.g., LLM-as-a-judge, synthetic evals, golden sets).
Built multi-agent or recursive reasoning systems.
Familiarity with observability for LLM behavior: hallucination detection, trace spans, vector drift.
Ruby or Typescript proficiency in production environments.
Past work in sales productivity, CRM, or workflow automation domains.

Base salary range: $166,000 - $248,850 USD

Employees are eligible to receive stock options and may also receive other forms of compensation.

The above represents total expected compensation for this role. Actual compensation will depend on various job-related factors, including, but not limited to, location, experience, and job qualifications.
