Harness brings AI and automation to this outer loop, turning complex, time-consuming workflows into streamlined processes at massive global scale.
The platform includes industry leading products in CI/CD, Feature Flags, Cloud Cost Management, Service Reliability, Chaos Engineering, Software Engineering Insights, Internal Developer Experience, and API discovery, observability, governance, and runtime protection. Over the past year, Harness powered 128M deployments, 81M builds, 1.2T API calls protected, and $1.9B in cloud spend optimized, helping customers like United Airlines and Choice Hotels accelerate releases by up to 75% and achieve 10x DevOps efficiency. With employees in over 25 countries, Harness is shaping the future of AI-driven software delivery — and we’re looking for exceptional talent to help us move even faster.
Senior Manager, Technical Documentation — Harness
About the role
Harness is building a new documentation organization and raising documentation quality across a fast-growing product portfolio. We are hiring a Senior Manager, Technical Documentation, to lead a team of Documentation Engineers and help establish scalable documentation standards, operating mechanisms, and a strong culture of ownership.
This is not a steady-state documentation role. The ideal candidate for this position has already demonstrated a strong work ethic by building effective documentation processes, enhancing documentation quality at scale, and leading teams through ambiguity.
You will collaborate closely with peer documentation leadership and work cross-functionally with Product Management, Engineering, Support, DevRel, and Sales Engineering.
What you will own
1) Build and lead a high-performing Documentation Engineering team
- Lead, mentor, and grow a team of Documentation Engineers.
- Set clear standards for ownership, execution discipline, and documentation quality.
- Coach both junior and senior engineers on structure, technical accuracy, clarity, and customer empathy.
- Create a team culture where documentation engineers do not wait for perfect inputs, but know how to drive clarity through the right questions and collaboration.
- Act as a player-coach when needed by directly contributing to high-impact documentation (for example, critical release documentation, complex integrations, or content requiring significant restructuring).
2) Establish scalable documentation processes (not ad-hoc heroics)
- Build documentation of operating mechanisms, including intake, prioritization, planning cadence, reviews, and release readiness alignment.
- Develop repeatable processes that can be scaled across multiple modules and stakeholders.
- Improve predictability and execution discipline while maintaining a high quality bar.
3) Raise documentation quality in a measurable, repeatable way
- Enhance documentation quality through effective governance and streamlined systems, including templates, checklists, structured reviews, audits, and established standards.
- Strengthen content usability through better mental models, accurate prerequisites, step sequencing, examples, and troubleshooting readiness.
- Identify systemic documentation gaps early and drive closure with engineering and product teams.
4) Drive cross-functional alignment and documentation accountability
- Build strong working relationships across Engineering, Product, Support, DevRel, and Sales Engineering.
- Advocate for documentation as a critical part of product adoption, customer trust, and release readiness.
- Maintain a high standard for clarity and accuracy, and encourage stakeholders to provide timely and accurate feedback.
What we are looking for
Minimum qualifications
- 15+ years of experience in technical documentation/developer documentation/product documentation.
- 5+ years of experience leading documentation teams as a people manager.
- Demonstrated experience setting up documentation processes and operating rhythms in dynamic product environments.
- Proven ability to improve documentation quality at scale (beyond editing and rewriting).
- Strong mentoring capability, including mentoring senior contributors.
- Strong stakeholder management maturity, with the ability to influence without authority.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience working in an engineering ecosystem with docs-as-code workflows (Git-based contributions, PR reviews).
- Strong working knowledge of JIRA, including managing documentation backlogs, creating reports/dashboards, and driving visibility through data.
- Experience in SaaS / Cloud / Developer Tools / DevOps / Security product documentation.
- Exposure to DocOps practices such as quality gates, automated checks, and ongoing content audit programs.
Leadership philosophy
We believe strong documentation teams are built through trust, mentorship, and clarity. Documentation Engineers are accountable for their deliverables. Documentation leaders remain accountable for overall outcomes, quality, and cross-functional alignment, and ensure the team has the support and advocacy needed to succeed.
