This is a hybrid role, with an expectation of being in our Toronto office three days per week.

About the Team

The Growth Engineering team at EvenUp plays a critical role in scaling the company’s AI-powered platform. This team builds reliable, scalable backend systems that directly support user acquisition, activation, engagement, and retention.

Responsibilities

  • Build and evolve scalable backend systems that power growth initiatives across the platform

  • Enable experimentation, feature rollouts, and data-driven iteration through robust backend frameworks and services

  • Partner cross-functionally with Product, Data, and Engineering to translate growth and product needs into scalable technical solutions

  • Own complex engineering projects end-to-end, from design through deployment and iteration

  • Uphold high standards for performance, scalability, reliability, and security

  • Contribute to the development of a strong engineering culture as the Toronto presence continues to grow

What You’ll Do

  • Backend Systems Development: Design, develop, and optimize robust backend systems that support growth-focused initiatives, ensuring reliability and performance at scale.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Product, Data, and Engineering teams to interpret growth and experimentation requirements and deliver high-quality, scalable solutions.

  • Platform & Framework Ownership: Lead the development of backend frameworks, libraries, and systems that enable experimentation, controlled rollouts, and measurable business impact.

  • Complex Problem Solving: Collaborate with engineers on challenging backend problems, including data processing, experimentation frameworks, infrastructure, and integrations with large-scale AI/ML systems.

  • Team Growth & Culture: Help build and reinforce the engineering culture in Toronto by sharing best practices, mentoring teammates, and maintaining a high bar for quality in a fast-paced environment.

  • End-to-End Ownership: Own projects from inception through production deployment, ensuring alignment with standards for performance, scalability, reliability, and security.

What We Look For

  • Extensive experience in backend engineering with a strong understanding of distributed systems

  • Proficiency in Python, Go, Java, or C++, with the ability to write clean, maintainable, production-quality code

  • Proven experience building scalable, reliable backend systems and APIs in high-performance environments

  • Experience thriving in startup or high-growth environments

  • Strong grasp of modern engineering practices, including test-driven development, code reviews, and deployment pipelines

  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure and technologies such as AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, and Terraform

  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills when working with cross-functional teams

  • Leadership potential with an interest in mentoring junior engineers and shaping best practices as the team grows

Bonus (Nice to Have)

  • Experience on growth-focused or experimentation-driven teams

  • Exposure to AI/ML systems, particularly generative AI or data-intensive applications

  • Familiarity with data pipelines, analytics platforms, or experimentation tooling

  • Prior experience scaling backend systems in rapidly growing startups
